Agreed. Besides, I would recommend putting off programming Linux a bit until you grok the UNIX environment: make, bash, configure scripts, CLI utils etc. Depends on how low-level you want to go of course. I don't think anybody could really call themselves a Linux programmer unless they know C and can write makefiles, and use C libraries etc.
It's uncommon now to find somebody with "machine language" skills but no higher level programming languages. David, what sort of CPUs have you programmed, and when?
