I recently purchased this book for NZ$65

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0764543733/qid=1086737765/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/102-0730733-2768107?v=glance&s=books

It is a gentle intro, covers shell programming in a chapter or two, then
moves on to C.
