The installer tried the slmodem driver which I had downloaded prior to the
install. It could not be tested yesterday at the installfest as internet
connection plug was busy. However it does not appear to work at home.
Interesting that you say Canon is crap - but most of my hardware is new and
I guess I did not purchase it with linux in mind. However I have it and I
need the portability of a laptop with internet capability. So perhaps
Linux is not for me at present since I have purchased "crap". In the
meantime I need to work and need the space - so I think I need to remove
Mandrake.

what driver was tried for the modem? I recall we corresponded some time ago
which referred to the slmodem driver. I assume you pointed that out to the
installer, and that the slmodem was tried??

what were the results?

if the modem truly does not work (and that would not tie in with the results
posted on the internet about this laptop, i suggest you have plenty of
options:

1. wanaka has adsl;or
2. an external modem; or
3. use an old computer as a gateway to the internet at home, and put a real
modem in it.

You get that for buying Canon I guess. complain to them, they produce the
crap. point out that you will buy HP next time so you have the option to use
something other than windows.

often multifunction devices _will_ still function as printers, although
their other functions may not work. thats an exercise to look at.
