Hi. Thanks for your input. Yes, I agree, it is NOT necessarily a
full-stop. I believe it should be okay to go under Linux (ubuntu). It uses
kernel 2.6... Yes, patience... ;)

A good suggestion to get started with an external modem.
The SiS winmodem isn't necessarily a full-stop. I do have mine (SiS 650)
going under the 2.4 kernel. I had limited success under 2.6 - it would
connect to some ISPs, but not to Clear. I have yet to try 2.6 with ALSA
enabled.
Can someone check whether the slmodem (2.9.10) is available in the
Ubuntu repositories? My quick web-trawl makes it appear that it isn't.
If not, can Ubuntu use a Debian package? Otherwise, it can be built from
the source.
It's still a good idea to use an external or PCMCIA modem first, though.
