Ok...

        NEC Versa C160... Can get necessary modem info from Windows o/s
also, as the laptop is set up as dual-boot... (both o/s's). Most things are
possible, if one knows the right people... ;) Knoppix won't work (apic
problem @ boot/install)... The laptop does have a DVD/CD-RW combo drive...
(recognised under ubuntu, so should read DVD's okay). Yes, can give
information from the scanModem.txt file generated under Linux/ubuntu, but
will have to type it in, due to problems transferring the data to the
desktop machine... :$ Probably have to be tomorrow now (looking at the
time)... so good night! Don't let the bed bugs bite! Thanks for all the
help. Nick said he'd help with networking etc. The cable was purchased
second hand, so is an unknown entity... (could be non-functioning). Hmm...
Time will tell... Meanwhile...
