Look vatsala I enjoy your company and you are a nice guy, but I have had
about enough.

Re some of the issues you have raised:

1. you are the most impatient person I have met in a month of sundays,
despite saying that you realise patience is needed.

2. you have your modem going, I spent 2 1/2 hours with you yesterday,
plus very many hours online and on the list researching and sending you
tips. I told you last night, and the list, that I would document your
case and what we did to fix it. now you say "I don't know what Nick did
or how to get it back." I am so sorry that I have a life and a business
and have not had time yet (a day later) to do that.

3. now for some reason you think you need a reinstall and
reconfiguration. reinstall is rarely needed in linux, and you have not
given us any idea what error messages you are getting on boot, nor what
you did that preceded this apparent disaster. "installed some kde
packages" is insufficient. Insufficient for linux diagnostics,
insufficient in windows diagnostics too I suggest. What did you install?
How did you install it? What error messages are you getting? Will it
boot off a cd? Will knoppix boot (using the noapic nolapic options we
used for ubuntu)

4. I am not sure what the problem is with the network-admin program in
your ubuntu install. however running a terminal and typing "sudo wvdial"
is certainly pretty damn easy. you should NOT expect everything to work
exactly as in windows, a little of your oft-claimed patience and you
will realise that most of the linux tools are in fact more logical and
more effective. Having done some research on the laptop before purchase
would have helped too.

5. i suggested modem lights because it was mentioned in the osnews
article i referred you to. If you had even the remotest clue you would
see that modem lights has a facility to set what program is utilised to
connect to the net., I don't run a modem, so I do not know if this will
work, but have you tried putting wvdial in the appropriate pleac in the
modem lights configuration screen? I would suggest killall wvdial as the
disconnect program.

6. if you were a complete computer newbie I would not be so grumpy, but
you claim to have been using computers and the internet for many years.
You surely know a little bit about troubleshooting, seeking help in a
community, looking up a web site, right clicking and choosing the
obvious from a menu and other blatantly obvious stuff. Try applying it!

7. above all try sending emails that make sense, not a pile of drivel.
I respect your religous and political views, indeed I imagine that the
Hare Krishna movement and the Free Software movement have some
synergies. But for heavens sake when you want a technical response, ask
a technical question. For example your question about sound in web
browsers could simply have said "I am using firefox on ubuntu linux, can
anyone tell me how to play .wav files embedded in a web page within the
browser? sound in general is working in ubuntu". The rest was otiose.

8. This IS a fairly social list and a lot of off-topic posts and newbie
fluff is tolerated. But your long paragraphs, often including a lot of
repetition from previous messages (or even the same message) is getting
a bit much. Please please we like you being in the community, but please
please have a little netiquette. Try googling for "esr how to ask a
question" - I am sick of searching for and posting the link.

9. Passages such as this "So, what to do? Where are
the competent experts to resolve all these crazy issues? You got them? Isn't
that what the list is for?" are just downright rude. Ask some intelligent, succinct
questions and you might get some answers.
