Asterisk is great although not necessary if you simply want to make VoIP phone calls.
In my case I got on to this because my mum and dad both use skype to talk with family a lot now. Personally I use a corless phone with a head set all the time. I find having to be connected to my PC very annoying.

My wife did the 'hissie fit' thing when the last woosh bill came in and she say how many toll calls I made last month.

There are many great SIP softphones for Linux. Twinkle is a great app for KDE users.

There are also heaps of SIP based hardphones available (not currently very available in NZ but I have some inside knowledge that that is about to change :).

Tell us everything!  Cordless is my interest.
