Absolutely. No matter what your OS is, as soon as you start putting large complex cpu-intensive applications on an older machine things will go slow. However, it's entirely possible to live without GNOME or KDE; there are plenty of other desktop/window managers that will help you get the appropriate amount of use from your machine. If all you want is to run Firefox and Thunderbird, any window manager will do for you; Ubuntu have lots of support for Xfce, especially in their Xubuntu distribution. There are others out there too. By not running KDE, you haven't lost the ability to run KDE applications; these will still work if it's installed on your machine. -jim
