Ok so it seems I should definitely forget about suse for the 333 as apart from the fact it won't darn install on it, even if it did it would be as slow as a dead dog as it is either KDE or gnome desktop, correct?
If I go with the FREE BSD then I will struggle to install that maybe as reading about it on the web it sounds more complicated. So all up most of you seem to be saying try this Ubantu? The main reason I want this 333 up and running is to browse the net, do e-mail and download files and stuff. I would of course want it networked to my other two computers, which of course raises the next question. I ubantu easy enough to network with windogs based machines? -----Original Message----- From: Jim Cheetham [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, 12 August 2006 7:26 p.m. To: [email protected] Subject: Re: FreeBSD vs Suse On Sat, Aug 12, 2006 at 07:16:50PM +1200, Reg wrote: > Ok so does this mean that even if I managed to put on this BSD as soon as I > start putting a desktop like KDE or Gnome on it then the computer will run > like a dog ? and thus defeat the whole point of having something that will > run on an older machine ? Absolutely. No matter what your OS is, as soon as you start putting large complex cpu-intensive applications on an older machine things will go slow. However, it's entirely possible to live without GNOME or KDE; there are plenty of other desktop/window managers that will help you get the appropriate amount of use from your machine. If all you want is to run Firefox and Thunderbird, any window manager will do for you; Ubuntu have lots of support for Xfce, especially in their Xubuntu distribution. There are others out there too. By not running KDE, you haven't lost the ability to run KDE applications; these will still work if it's installed on your machine. -jim
