I have installed (and it's performing OK) the wvdial 1.55-ubuntu3
(dapper) package found amongst Mepis' Synaptic Package Manager
collection. That doesn't help Alan until he is online or I have
installed *.deb packages by downloading and right clicking on them in
a Konqueror file-manager, then selecting Manage Package/Install from
the drop-down menu. They subsequently show in the Synaptic's database
OK.

Of interest to Conexant/Rockwell modem chipset users is
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers and select the specific driver(s) for
Mepis 6.0 on the download page(s). In other words they are tailored
to the Mepis kernel build - there are free versions available.
