Courtesy of the recent WGA I've managed to pimp out Linux to a few
nontechnical friends. However one of them is looking at buying a
portable mp3 player and I have no working knowledge of them so I'm going
to assume at least one person here knows what they are talking about and
ask advice. I'd like an idea of what will/won't work with Linux
(specifically Ubuntu) and is good at a price range of somewhere between
$100 and $200.

I've got several cheap ($<200) generic mp3 players working fine on Ubuntu Breezy/Dapper (there are plenty for sale on Trademe)

As previously posted none of them have .ogg however which is a real bummer

As far as I know any USB mass storage device would probably be ok

I have a Samsung YP-D1 that works great and supports nearly all the codecs, it works
natively or in Dapper

It also works fine through VMWare Server, if you want to install the crappy windoze friendly software provided - the only down side is, like the iRivers it's well out of the $<200 range

According to the blogs the iAudios play nicely with Linux as well
