Its a low-profile case. Approximately four and a half inches high,

No. You connect as necessary. In fact it can be set up to either drop the line 
on a single click command via its Web interface or on the absence of traffic. 
It then dials out again as soon as you want to make a TCP/IP connection to a 
web site or whatever. Unfortunately that is becoming less possible now-a-days 
because of the more or less continuous 'background radiation' coming out of 
all the scanning robots etc., etc.
