Cheers, this is helpful.
# htop

is even more helpful. i.e. imho it's worth installing.

...especially if you install from source. The latest version has the option to
trace executables at the press of a keystroke.
A good example of the local *nix List working at its best is seen in this thread.

Steve demo'd htop at his 'GNU/Linux Security' talk to CLUG a couple of months back, and Chris has reiterated the tip now in text. This latter has multiplied the number of users, to include myself - htop package obtained quickly via Synaptic.

The main(?) benefit of htop over top is easy access to the entire process stack, eliminating the need for the "$ ps -ax" step. + Lots of Fx-key shortcuts, .. great fun! Thanks.

But have I gained "the option to trace executables at the press of a keystroke" by this install method? I.e. was it better for me to "install from source" please?

Ah!.. triple-reading elicits comprehension. I need the --version number of my htop to answer this for myself, by checking against Nick's sourceforge link, and to [learn to] download and "install from source" again if dissatisfied. (After uninstalling via Synaptic first. / Or "$ sudo apt-get remove htop".)

[This simple transparency of o/s configuration also explains my 'intermediate-level' choice of what GNU/Linux distribution to use. Everyone learns differently, however, and the base skill is learning how to choose what is appropriate to your needs and skill level.]

Cheers, Rik

P.S. my sig is designed to save people from having to ask me "what o/s are you running" before they can answer my Qs. And eventually you learn to run without asking Qs :-)
