Personally, I like what pc+net offers educationally etc - by supplying
in one the 'pull technology' mega-library, and a barrier to the
time-consuming nonce output of this world. 'On-demand' irchat reverses
that capacity, imho.
So, addressing your original Q, a selective mail-list is a happy
compromise towards 'normal conversation' - once we accept it isn't
always 'on-demand' like irc. For instances like you reported,
instinctively I tend to 'blame Xtra' spam filters - for the enormous
mail surges (causing periodic delivery delays) that they must have to
deal with. Annoying at the time, but par for the course.
