All I can say is YES, do it! Apart from it being the perfect use for an
old/virtual server, it's a really good learning experience ( and a chance to
get this thread even vaguely on topic! ). No graphics, run headless, etc...
Not to start a flame war on software suggestions - I'm using my personal
favourites - the following will provide you with all you could need:
no-ip.org - map your domain name to a dynamic ip address
sendmail - receive your email
. clam av milter - virus checking
. MailWasher Server - anti-spam ( well, I did have to, didn't I! - free
optional FirstAlert! licenses on request )
procmail - local mail delivery
courier - locall access to your mail
Once you've got that up and running, you can add....
apache - to support....
squirrelmail - web based mail server ( ugly but indestructable )
ssl - use self signed certificated to encrypt your smtp, pop3, imap, http
streams
