Sure, I understand what you say, and have generally heeded that advice in the
past - and got into trouble if I have not.  This box only has one user, it has
been running Thunderbird in this manner successfully for a very long time. 
Thanks for your replies though, I do appreciate it.  

Adept Package Manager stopped working at some stage earlier in the year and I
have only had apt-get for updates and installs (which is fine because I actually
prefer the command line).  Maybe the 2 breaks are related in some way. 

Also may be that my run of good luck on this install has come to an end . . .
