Hi, thanks too for your reply. I have a fresh installation to fix not just this thunderbird issue but a few others including non-functional Adept Manager. The below server settings were correct on the broken install. Now that I have a functional thunderbird install and have a chance to run dpkg -L thunderbird again and compare with the output from Nick's request the other day, there were about 60 missing files within /usr/lib/thunderbird compared to what I have now, presumably a broken .deb file or a fault in it's download when running apt-get. Though I did delete the deb file in /var/cache/apt/archives in my attempt to rectify this, so maybe the former, as I discovered the problem pretty quickly and attempted to rectify immediately. Maybe waiting an hour or day would have fixed things, I don't know.

Anyway, this box is going fine again. Aside from verifying some backups before proceeding, there is only a couple of hours time involved from beginning to end, including additional packages and updates. Again, thanks to everyone for the replies.

I assume the gui is working ok and that you can see your existing mail folders?

If the settings above don't solve your problem I recommend that you make a copy of your existing mail directory folders to another location in your home directory and then remove thunderbird using synaptic or APT,then reinstall and copy your old mail folder to the new install
location ( remove or rename the installs newly created mail folder so
your old mail folder becomes the default).

Hope this helps.
