I assume the gui is working ok and that you can see your existing mail
folders?
If the settings above don't solve your problem I recommend that you make
a copy of your existing mail directory folders to another location in
your home directory and then remove thunderbird using synaptic or
APT,then reinstall and copy your old mail folder to the new install
location ( remove or rename the installs newly created mail folder so
your old mail folder becomes the default).
