As a Lurker on the list, I don't have much time to spare for this, but
Computer Science department does have some machines if you need
to borrow them..I've checked and it is ok for this project ..
Main issue with them would be the lack of wireless..usb sticks?
But they would be Core 2 Duo with 2Gig memory and 19" LCD and keyboards
and mice.
Can you use a switch?
May have other bits available if you need them

Hi Ryan,
Molten Media should be able to help out with some demo machines, we've got a bunch of Compaq SFF
mini tower we have earmarked for community projects. They are P4's 2.2 - 3.0 GHz 1GB Ram and 80GB
HD's, So ok for running standard OS's. We could probably lend you guys 3-4 with keyboards mice
wireless cards and 17" CRT screens if needed. If it is on a Wednesday I wouldn't be able to help
out on the day.

Is anyone else on the list wanting to do something a little further
North? If a few other people can give the places for alternative events
I'm keen on helping as much as possible.
I vote Rangiora Library as a venue. It's fairly large, already has a few
Linux manuals on the primise and the general area could do with
something of their own.
Good idea Ryan. Can you please check with Rangiora Library, and see what
sort of facility we could have there for SFD? i.e. Is a PC lab
available, or can we have a table with a power point indoors, etc. etc.
I may be able to help you find some people to work with on 17 Sept, SFD11.
Okay, I finally got around to biking the ~25Km to Rangiora so that I can
discuss this with the staff. No computer lab but there is an area with lots of
power plugs and tables where we can set up some demonstration machines.
Also I might be able to talk the staff into letting us use a display board (for
want of a better term). There is also Free WiFi.
There isn't really any room for an installfest but we can still educate the
public.
A couple of other thoughts, this library closes early on Saturday so could we
move to a different day? The head librarian said that Wednesdays are
particularly good.

Was this by different means than simply writing the ISO's to blank
CD-Rs from the supermarket? The way you phrased your post suggest so
but you gave no details.
I printed the discs. Artwork would need to be sorted. The CDs come with
nicely fitting plastic bags rather than paper sleeves.
If so would you be willing to do some mandriva / magia ones? I'm having
thoughts about a North Canterbury SFD event and I despise Ubuntu.
No problem. I would go for Mageia, the original Mandrive crew are working
on it.
How much would it cost me to take you up on that? I also want to hand out
some discs with a selection of major applications (LibreOffice, Thunderbird,
etc) in their Windows form. Finally I am deeply tempted to get some
one page quick guides made at a nearby printing and copy business to
give out.
My rough plan is:
1: Spend a little time each day from now to then writing documentation.
2: Asses posibility of a Rangiora team (the documentation can be used
by the South Christchurch team if this doesn't go ahead).
3: Talk to Philip, have him print out as much as affordable some time
a head.
4: Try to draw as many Linux manuals in the Waimakariri district to Rangiora
Library as possible around 5 days ahead of the event.
5: Print out documentation at 9.
6: Set up display once that is done.
7: Set up some computers that Blatantly show off Linux. I can bring two.
8: Spend until five educating the public.
9: Pub across the road for an early dinner.
Anyway everyone, I'll need some help setting up and manning the display so if
you are interested please leave a reply.
