Well, that post by bloggsie45 sounded very much like someone from another culture who spent a fair bit of time in NZ, and is quite observant. I couldn't help but agree with many of the positive points, and a fair few of the negative ones. Helped explain (from a NON-managerial perspective) why NZ is much worse than the average at keeping hold of its qualified migrants (like me). BTW, every migrant I met who was frustrated with the place said "it's not (mostly) about the money" - even though that was the only explanation most life-long Kiwis mentioned. > Also, by and large the place is run by a bunch of intellectual > know-nothing, semi-literate, old dungers mired in conflicts-of-interest. Undiplomatic, and self-contradictory, but a ring of truth to it. An angry South African mining engineer said it beautifully: "The managers here don't accept good advice. They'd rather be the captain of the Titanic than the first mate of the Queen Mary." > Any and all vibrant youth is very successfully being exported in order > that they can pay off their student loans. Very true. I dealt with an "exporting recruiter" in Wellington that only handled 3 professions: accounting, law, and computing. In 1 year alone that one firm shipped off 6,000 highly-qualified Kiwis. Econometrics =does= work. Bad organisations eventually get punished, whether the owners realise it or not, But pity the poor remaining staff, who get flogged harder to keep things afloat. Everyone there should give their boss a copy of Jared Diamond's book "Collapse". Very good.
