Modems, so old fashioned, most people have forgotten how to set them up, particularly in linux. A dying art (thank heavens). Start some simple tests when you are online. ping an expernal IP address like 203.96.152.4 (one of telstra's dns servers). If that works try somewhere by name, I usually ping www.ihug.co.nz because it is a short domain name that I can remember.
