Hi,
I have had some good results with a vacuum cleaner. All power cords removed from the computer. Some care and attention to use a plastic head on the vacuum cleaner hose. My son has done it also, and there have been no dead computers as a result. There have only been happy computers.

Cheers,
  Derek.

dust buildup on the CPU cooling fins can be sorted with compressed air
or a blower (be careful not to cut your fingers on the fan)

Best Practice is to turn the computer off before cleaning the fan :-P
Unless you're feeling ballsy !
