Hmm... some of you might know I spent about 5 years fighting
spam.Probably the most soul destroying job known to man. You can check
out any time you want...
As you're on this list, I assume you have at least a passing interest in
tinkering with linux. So with that in mind, I would find myself a cheap
and cheerful hosting provider, and rent a virtual server off them. Then
set yourself up on it.
The upside: hours of endless fun, and the download speeds in serverland
are truly impressive.
The downside: mail delivery is largely reputation based, and you will
start off with a lot of your stuff being delivered to spam. You'll have
to find out how to set up exciting things like SPF, DKIM, and maybe even
DMARC, and spam filtering. And you really need to understand what these
services to to use them effectively ( I recently responded to a rant by
a prominent local IT 'guru' about the difference between the SPF ~all
and -all and why the former wasn't a complete waste of time for example ).
It will not be as cheap as commercial services, and it will let through
far more spam than the gmails of this world. Once working though, the
site will be pretty reliable: set up backups and use IMAP clients and
you've got a far better DR solution than VF ever offered in the first
place ). And of course, there are many uses for a VPN to a server in the
USA for example...

My 2c...
Buy your own domain, pay for commercial email hosting with a provider
you feel you can trust.
Do not purchase the domain through the ISP who hosts the email, so when
you decide you don't like the ISP you can go elsewhere and easily take
your address(es) with you.
Agree totally with what Volker said: "declaring their personal worth as
$0.00 with gmail post vodafail."
Personally I use Rackspace, in the USA, and I use no free email accounts
for email I care about. Not cheap, but excellent service etc.

Hey everyone,
I'm sure you've seen the news Vodafone is dropping their email service
so I'm in the market for another hosting solution and I'm curious
about what other people are using.
Having a quick rummage about the place and Lavabit, ProtonMail,
Fastmail seem like interesting contenders. A 5GB inbox at least would
be good.
I don't want to use Gmail or Lookout (or is it spelt OutLook? :)). The
idea of having bots trawling through my email is unsettling. In some
respects, one might as well use Gmail as sooner or later you'll end up
communicating with other Gmail users and having your email scrutinised.
Or is my logic flawed?
Cheers,
