  I understand your positon  on 'italic' Japanese font but why not
'bold'?  Actually, X-TT (ttf rendering engine included in XF86 4.0.x)
makes it possible to produce arbitrary combination of 'italic', 'bold'
etc from a single ttf by editing fonts.dir file.
