I, for one uses linux for my internet access and local network
management (like a dedicated router/firewall) with a distro called
IP-COP [www.ipcop.org], as well as I am experimenting in setting up a
web server with another distribution called "redhat fedora core".

And soon (if my budget allows it) I will be setting up a desktop machine
with linux to take over a number of regular duties that my windows
computer is still doing like email, file storage, etc...

Someday I hope to no longer have a need to keep running windows!

Basically Linux is the equivalent of Windows, it is an operating system
software that allows you the user to operate a computer. Windows allows
you to run programs like Word, Access, Excel, Games, etc... And
basically Linux allows you to run similar (or compatiable) programs.

In my point of view, linux commands are like using MS-DOS on steroids!
And you can choose from a number of graphical interfaces for your own
custom setup.

And a little bit of warning, Linux can give you a bit of a steep
learning curve, as it is not yet as easy to setup and run as Window's
"point-click-and-drool" interface. (but it's kinda getting there).
