thanks allot I think tonight after a meeting I am jumping off the bridge and into the pool called linux I would start it now but have on question I haven't seen answered yet is it like windows were you format the hard drive then run the disk or can you just down load the file and it will wipe out windows and replace it with it's self hopefully don't have to run of a CD has if i don't have any blank disks to burn to OK on the 6.5 one it says on it mandrake linux operating system 6.5 I am sure it is a old wotless version because it looked real old ands I will go to that sight to download it then the question is installing it to the other computer can I download it to a zip disk ands run the zipdisk on the computer I am installing to or does it have to boot off the install program I.E. right now the computer has windows 98 can I put the zip disk in the drive while running windows and install or do I have to make a bootable C.D. and boot of the install program ----- Original Message ----- From: Chad Martin To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, February 17, 2007 10:52 PM Subject: ACPI and print sharing (Was: [LINUX_Newbies] hi)

The Linux kernel has ACPI built in, which are the drivers for various power-saving features. Most distros should have this turned on in their default kernel. > OK is there a sight I can go to say which version of linux I > should use www.distrowatch.com > I have a free CD for ubonto and I also have a C.D. that is > an old version of lynux that says linux operating system 6.5 I found > in a second hand store can I get a newer version or would that be > better for an older computer. Here's another initial thing to learn about Linux. The kernel is in version 2.6 right now. Various organizations will package the kernel along with other software into a distribution. Ubuntu is one of them. I'm not sure what distro you would have that is version 6.5, but if it's Redhat, that's ancient and therefore pretty much useless. > and is there a place I can go to that > will talk about setting up a network using linux and having machines > connecting that run win XP and win 98. what all software will I need. www.samba.org. Check the docs on that website. Samba will allow Windows machines to connect to a Linux file and print server as if it were a Windows server. > the printers i will be using is a laserjet 6l for black and white > hooking in using parallel port and a hp desk jet 952c inkjet which > can hook in either with parallel port or usb I only use it for > printing color. You'll probably need to use CUPS in concert with Samba to get printing working.
