It's good to learn how to do things in text mode, it's one of the major advantages of Linux. However, unless you can get into graphic mode to browse some of the web sites, it becomes difficult to learn how to do tihngs in text mode. :) The command you are thinking of is probably startx This should load a graphic interface if one is configured. Configuring it is a different story. Often, you can automatically configure it by typing X -configure This will create a file and then give you instructions about how use it to try to startx. > I also remember I had been told that you should avoid logging as root > all the time, I don't know if that really is a problem, but if it is, > I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction > as to how create a username or account, I don't really know the name > of it in English. The command is usually either useradd or adduser. (I don't have Slackware running at this moment, so I can't check that.) You might want to put the user into the wheel group as well. We'll take this one step at a time, but a common setup is to only allow users in the wheel group to su to root. More commonly these days, people use sudo, and the default sudoers file makes it easy to allow wheel group members to do things. However, this is getting ahead of ourselves. See if you can get X started. Then try adduser, if that doesn't work, use useradd. I believe it will give you a dialog to create the user, but I'm not sure about that. Assuming that whoever set this up for you included some sort of web browser, once you have X started, you can go to http://www.slackbook.org/html/book.html which is the Slackware book. It has all sorts of useful information, including the Slackware way to work with users and groups. (Aha--taking a quick look at it, you can use adduser which will give you a dialog.) If you have a text type web browser included, you can browse the book online even before you configure X. The way to tell if you have a program installed is to use the which command For example which lynx If you get an answer, it means you have the text based browser lynx installed. (You can also try which w3m, which elinks and which links which are different text based web browsers.) > > I'm not sure the 'technical' terms I used in here are correct, English > is not my first language, so I appologize in advance for that. :) Your English is quite good--sad to say, (for we Americans) probably better than some of the native speakers. :) -- Scott Robbins PGP keyID EB3467D6 ( 1B48 077D 66F6 9DB0 FDC2 A409 FA54 EB34 67D6 ) gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys EB3467D6 Spike: Where have you been pet?
