Lots of cases from people like Gateway and Dell are put together on their factory floor with non universal fittings are are almost impossible to re-use. You need to look for discarded self builds or indepependant supplied units discards.

Also, regarding your fears with hardware... Generally speaking, if it fits, it's OK. If it doesn't fit, it's not. As long as a connector fits into a slot or plug correctly, that's pretty much where it's supposed to go.
