Not so much. You will have to know some detail about Microsoft SMB
networking, and what you want to do. Configuring Linux software is not
anywhere near programming, but it does involve editing text files by
hand. That requires precision in spelling and syntax, but it isn't
programming.
Also, regarding your fears with hardware... Generally speaking, if it
fits, it's OK. If it doesn't fit, it's not. As long as a connector
fits into a slot or plug correctly, that's pretty much where it's
supposed to go.
