Yup, sounds like Ubuntu. Great for advocacy. Typical. This wouldn't be so bad if they weren't pushing themselves so strongly as the replacement for Windows. Depending upon your resources, there are many distributions which offer LiveCD's--that is, a system that will run from your CDROM and it is a good way to see if a particular distribution will run on your machine. Some other possibilities. MCN Live, Mandriva, Vector (especially for older machines). Blag is another one that seems to do well with most hardware. PCLINUXOS is another one that is gaining a lot of popularity. All of these ~should~ install without problem on most machines unless it's really ancient hardware. Don't let that Ubuntu experience turn you off. For whatever reason, Ubuntu has, in my experience, been one of the weakest at hardware recognition ever since Dapper. Edgy was where the problems began and Feisty (you'll note the cutesy names are in alphabetical order) fixed some problems but had others. http://www.distrowatch.com lists hundreds of distributions. You might take a look at say, the top 5 or 6 in the column at the right of the page and see if any appeal to you. Of course, you'll get plenty of other posts saying Ubuntu is the best, and for many people, it works quite well, hence its popularity. However, while it's not that hard for a more experienced person to work around, for a newcomer's intro to Linux I no longer recommend it. > -- Scott GPG KeyID EB3467D6 ( 1B848 077D 66F6 9DB0 FDC2 A409 FA54 D575 EB34 67D6) gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys EB3467D6 Giles: It's a trick.
