To both posters of issues,

the live cd version of knoppix/ubuntu has some great driver support for
the majority of hardware available. This being said, I have had some
experiences in the past where these types of errors may occur - and in
all cases it is where one of the hardware drivers required is something
similar to a "winmodem" type of issue. This occurs when hardware
vendors are too cheap to include full firmware with the actual hardware,
depending on software to cover their shortcomings (notably - Promise
hardware and sata controllers). There are ways around this in linux,
but it requires some indepth knowledge of the drivers that are available
as well as some patience to run through testing.

May we know what type of hardware you are running? (please don't use
the "I bought a machine from costco - you know the one..." that doesn't
help too much)
