I thought of this but the problem is that it runs so painfully slow 
that I run out of patience. In fact I have a Live CD with Knoppix and 
it runs fine on my normal desktop CD. For some reason when I fire up 
this old Dell Optiplex with the Knoppix CD in, I get the same results 
described above. The BIOS is set to boot from the CD-ROM. Did I 
somehow alter the master boot sector when I attempted to install 
Ubuntu? I'm not sure what I'm talking about here or how to correct it.
