Another way to connect several machines on a network such as yours is
to put a small print server on the printer, connect the print server
to the network and then install the printer drivers in each machine.
I have this arrangement working on four machines using one printer.
The print server is a small box about 3" by 3" by 1/2" that has a
network jack (RJ45) that you connect to your router, a USB or
parallel port that you connect to your printer and a power jack that
you plug in the small power brick that comes with the print server.
Print servers come in wired or wireless versions. The description
above is for a wired one. When you install the software for the
print server in windows, you can set the print server to network via
DHCP or Static addresses.
Best to assign a static address so DHCP does not reassign the print
server a different address and then you can't print until you
reinstall the printer driver.
On my Linksys router, I assign DHCP addresses in the 192.168.100 to
149 range (for the computers) and then most of the rest are available
for static addresses. I use 192.168.1.5 as a static address for the
print server (you assign using the print server administration
software).
I have a Hawking Technologies USB print server, a Windows Vista
computer, a Windows XP Media Center computer, a Windows XP Home
laptop and and a Linux machine multibooting to Windows 2000 Pro and
18 distibutions of Linux all using the same printer (HP LaserJet
1200).
My daughter has a Linksys print server sharing her printer much
like my setup, with her desk top and laptop.
