Mail from ILUG-BOM list (Non-Digest Mode)
Sometime on Jul 2, Rajen Parekh assembled some asciibets to say:

For someone to gain access to your machine, you should have a server
running. Programs like Apache, Sendmail, named are all servers and all
have bugs that can be exploited.
What I suggest is that you: 1) Read at least some part of the security
howto, 2) read the firewall howto. You don't have to set up a firewall.
3) Edit /etc/inetd.conf and comment out any servers that you do not need.
If you don't understand what a server does, try man first, try your docs
next and if you still can't, ask here.
4) Edit /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny
You may want to make hosts.deny block everyone, and then explicitly allow
connections from LOCAL to ALL in hosts.allow
