RAJEN,
One of the biggest mistakes that i had ever committed was of running my m/c
as ROOT especially when connecting to the net. But it didn't take these
NETIZENS & LUGGERS out here to convince me that it really ain't good to do so.
Though i have never had ny downtime while using LINUX due to any virus probs
or ny such thin like that, i guess u should too go this way if u want to make
ur m/c safe by plugging the holes that exist in it.
Never run ya m/c as root, "su -" to root whenever ya ha ny adminstration
to be taken care of. This is the safest way to work on LINUX. And u can always
bet ,"There is nothin as a m/c safe from any outside intrusions, the SAFEST M/C
in the whole WORLD is the one whose plug has been pulled. So u can only move
towards makin ur m/c less likely towards various exploits from outsiders.
Try out the various SECURITY docs & FAQS out there. Check out
www.securityfocus.com ot go too www.google.com & search for SECURITY on LINUX.
One of the best SECURITY resources that i hav found is at
www.astalavista.box.sk. Their search will throw up 100's of links on secutiry
issues related to LINUX.
