The cracker has basically applied what he has learnt from different
sources. Hacking is one of the art forms he relies on. Personal skills
is another. If the combination of two art forms creates a new art form,
then so be it.
A hacker never has need for personal skills, because the 'pawns' as you
put it are completely insignificant and insufficiently
inspired/intelligent (note the large number of 'in' words) to consider in
one's gameplan.
As far as personal skills go, we were taught in school or college to smile
when speaking on the phone. It may have been FC, or some other character
building lecture, but I definitely remember several such sessions
throughout my schooling from high school through to my MCA.
I also think most people have read the Mitnick story. Those who haven't
should. Mitnick may be the most famous hacker/cracker (both), but was
definitely not the best. He got caught. Check the hacker hall of fame
for those that didn't get caught.
Ciao,
Philip

What's the difference between a computer salesman and a used car salesman?
A used car salesman knows when he's lying.
