Actually, (although I have never tried Kmail), from what I read this
morning it appears that Kmail does in fact implement a non-standard
Maildir spool, and it might make sense to move towards a maildir storage
scheme that is more compatible or more flexible with other clients
through IMAP such as smartphones/webapps/etc.  If he just wants to use a
single client on a single machine, then he might want to just stick with
Kmail, even with the understanding it loses compatibility.
