It's not so much the directory format than it is the index system. The problem is not knowing what's going to happen to the indexes. I could easily set up IMAP, using either a mailstore in my datacenter or locally; the problem is what happens if the indexes don't work. If I delete them and let systems start over I believe I lose a lot of metadata. I've already started to go through my mailboxes to figure out what metadata I really need.
