Right. I would expect it to ride the same cable path into the MDF. However I wasn't sure if it would necessarily be a different DSLAM. Couldn't they just mix ADSL/SDSL cards in the same chassis? I suppose I should post a query to NANOG. I have traced the cable path in my neighborhood, from primary MPOE to CO. (yes I have two MPOE. One in house, one in garage (not currently taking any inbound traffic). Confirmed my traces with local engineers. My telephone line goes to a line in my back alley. This terminates into a box about 600 feet away, which is directly connected to a fiber path into the CO. The DSLAM that serves my house is in the CO and not one of the outlying huts (labeled as neighborhood gateways) If I go on my roof I can see the CO. :) <ot> Wish I could do a PtP wifi link with them. Once I become a CLEC I might be able to do that. The CO has windows, but I don't know what type. Different types have different rf propagation characteristics. It would be significantly easier then shooting a link up to the hills and into DTLA WMMR. (downtown los angeles, wireless meet me room). Some think I can do it on unlicensed, others don't. We will see. I will probably end up doing both. The long range option will give me decent diversity of carriers, and low latency interconnects. Pricing will probably work out the same on a per mbit basis (CLEC pricing with ATT in California is pretty good. It's competitive with He/cogent). At some point when one wants to provide sufficient bandwidth/ip space, one needs to link up with the big boys directly over l2. (I suppose this portion belongs in the other reply to this thread about being an ISP...) </ot> So with sufficient backup power, I can provide emergency net access to my neighborhood via wifi, as the CO should stay up longer then the outlying huts. I'm currently investigating backup power options that can be had cheaply. Natural gas generator for the whole house seems like the best option. However gas lines tend to rupture during earthquakes. I suppose solar is good. Wind requires a pretty tall tower (most likely not able to get a permit for) to get sufficient capacity. Thoughts on backup power? Who here is doing solar?
