Well crap then!
Sorry if I was wrong.
But use the Dev edition to see if EG's make it.
I've been using Enterprise ColdFusion since it there was an E version (CF5 I
think) - 10 years is too long.
Anyway here is one example I recently coded for "event gateways" with MX 7
(updater 3).
1. Complete stranger (new user) visits site to apply for a job.
2. User applies for job and submits resume (physical file).
3. File is uploaded successfully and user is notified on screen.
And here is where the really cool stuff now happens automatically.
4. CF identifies the new Resume (say a MS Word document or a PDF) uploaded
into a temporary folder.
5. File is scanned for viruses/malicious code, etc. If doc fails doc is
neutralised and sender notified via email. Event logged using CFLOG just in
case.
6. If doc passes scan (correct MIME type included) is moved to another
folder - also watched by an event gateway.
7. Document is parsed and depending on job description is passed to the
"Verity" folder for indexing and inclusion in database and search engine.
8. Site owner is notified via email, job application via email and/or SMS
that application received.
Total processing time about 600 milliseconds from accepting the file,
rejecting it or forwarding it, and notifying the necessary people.

Yep Mark--event gateways are only available in CFMX 7 Enterprise. Not sure
what gateways Peter is referring to as available in Standard, but event
gateways are an Enterprise-only feature (and well worth the money if you
need them!).
