To be exact, I wasn't aware of any difference in external appearance between Rick Dom and Dom until that side-by-side HGUC Rick Dom vs. Dom pic from a couple weeks ago (thanks to Boaz). Then I went back to Hobby Search and pull out the back-views of MG Dom and Rick Dom for a side-by-side to see if the longer pointy skirt is a HGUC innovation. It seems not to be the case, the MGs seem to have that difference too (not obvious at all since the MG manual photos are not exactly comparable). Then I went and check all the references I can find: MAHQ, MS encyclopedia 2ed (~1998?) and 0079 (TV) Roman Album. Nope, nowhere could I find a lineart that says this is how Dom look like and that is how a Rick Dom look (specificially the longer pointy skirt). In fact, everywhere I found a pic of Rick Dom, it's exactly the same pic used for Dom. Example: MAHQ uses this http://www.mahq.net/mecha/gundam/msgundam/ms-09.jpg for both Dom and Rick Dom. Only thing I can think of now is that MS Mechanics (???) which is a stack of data cards from around... 1996? Those data cards has various detail line arts for distinguishing features and other technotidbits (cockpit, backpack etc). In fact... I think current owner of those data cards of mine is still on the list, any help? ;-) Now the pic from HJ lays it bare, the differences are: longer pointy skirt (Rick Dom), exhaust nozzles on backpack and soles. Seriously how many people here can claim to know the differences until they saw this picture or the MG models? > > I do remember that in the old model series, there was only a Rick Dom > > model at 1/144 (I believe the same can be said for 1/100 and 1/60) but > That's very true. I can't say Rick Dom was referred with the "Rick" word in > either TV or movies (it's usually just "Do-mu" or "the one in skirt"), so it I can't exactly remember either, but I am happy to accept that Rick Dom had that distinct prefix and its own technobabble from the time the TV series aired in Japan. As mentioned a few times already, Tomino doesn't spend (waste) a lot time going over the names, model numbers and techobabbles in the animation. My point is that was there ANYTHING ELSE other than name (model number) and technobabble between Dom and Rick Dom until the MG models? What about MSIA? I can't remember if MSIA Dom/Rick Dom was before or after MG. > That brings me to one annoyance from modelers. Ground type Gelgoog. That's > one thing really run against the 0079 timeline IMHO. Well there was that scene with Char's Gelgoog and Gyan in Texas (?) colony. So Gelgoog can operate in 1-G and 1-atm envoirnment. Boy what do you think about ground type Ball? So don't you think MS-09R Rick Dom and MS-09 Dom are uniquely indistinguishable from each other? All other related MS pairs, e.g. green Zaku/Zugock/Gelgoog vs Char's versions, GM CCT vs ST vs GT vs 0083 vs 08MST, are distinguishable by major difference in color scheme and/or commander antenna and/or surface details, ornaments and weapons. I don't exactly remember how to tell 08MST's GM Type E apart from 0080's GM Space Type, but MS Encyc and MAHQ are always there to Zaku/Acguy 0079 vs. 08MST versions present an interesting comparison. Here we have the same MS shown in two different animations and we are supposed to believe that they are the same MS even if the drawing styles are very different. So we actually have a case where the same MS Acguy MSM-03 in two different animations is more distinguishable than two different MS Dom and Rick Dom in the same animation and drawing style. So I go back to the question whether Tomino/Okawara did make them different back in 1979. Considering the pressure to crank out more Monster Of The Week, it's very odd to (1) keep the same color scheme for a new MS, (2) make the external difference invisible from the front view (or front-slightly-to-the-left standard lineart view). Even more curious, now we know there are actually three color schemes, a "TV" version for Black Tri-star's Doms and a "standard???" version for both Dom and Rick Dom and the "OYW" version scheme. But no one venture to say this is the ground type color scheme for Dom and that is the space type color scheme for Rick Dom. Could it be that there was really no external difference at all? And the external difference (longer skirt and larger nozzles), like the beam bazooka is a retrocon? -- Dr. Core -------------------------------------------------- The Gundam Mailing List MK-II [email protected] Archives: http://www.gundam.com/gml Help: Email [EMAIL PROTECTED] with this in the BODY: help list
