If I could hazard a guess, it would be that the primary difference between "ground" and "space" combat type models would be the difference in the way that the unit is built to withstand pressure. In space, the unit has to deal with vacuum, whereas a "ground" model would presumeably be spending a lot more of their time in an atmosphere (since afaik, the only "ground" area in the setting without an atmosphere is the Moon). Space models would presumeably be built to emphasize keeping the cockpit pressure in, while ground models would be built with more of an emphasis on keeping the pressure equalized - or possibly even allowing for limited underwater work (such as Shiro's riverbed trip in 08th MS Team). That's not to say that space models would completely ignore bracing for pressure from outside. Things like missile explosions are likely to require bracing from that direction as well. It's just that the amount of bracing in each direction would be different. There would probably be other differences, such as an emphasis on whether or not gravity has an effect on the thrusters, and the expectations of any on-board software. But I would suspect that the primary difference between the two would be the way pressure is handled. And "Ground-Type Ball"? That's the job handled by a tank, and the Federation had plenty of those.
