Haman WAS both.

You are totally right. I missed that. But was she really a frontline
soldier or more of an elite who came out to battle when she wanted to?

If she went to the frontline, she was a frontline soldier. However you are pointing out one weirdness in the role of (at least Zeon) women in the UC world: the oversight that if you have women placed in high-level combat positions, you're going to have women in low-level ones too. If there is a Kishiria Zabi or a Cima Garahau, there's going to be a Sgt. Mary Zeek, with her Zaku II team as well.

Which reminds me of a sort-of non sequitur: I noticed that the norm for Zeon women seems to be very long hair while for Federation women it's short hair. There are exceptions like Christina MacKenzie and Aina Sahalin of course, but Cima's hair is to her butt, a young officer Aina is speaking to has a braid to her hips, and other women such as Kishiria, Cecilia, and Yuri's secretary whose name eludes me have long hair fastened up into a chignon. Were Kishiria to let her hair down, it'd be to the backs of her thighs.
