Ok who's escorting who? In ANH, why did DV personally go out in
TIE-A? His swamps and swamps of regular TIE's aren't doing the job
right? So he went out and take care of bussiness. I forgot how many
attack waves he shot down, but there were a few. And now come the
last wave, Luke's. He's going after this last fighter, oh "the Force
is strong with this one!" So do you think DV would be pushing the
envelop of his TIE-A to defeat this last attack against Death Star?
If he had been 10% quicker taking care of all the other X-Wings and
Y-Wings, Luke would be dead and the Death Star 1 would be casually
grinding the rebellion into dust. So why would DV held back his
speed? Let his nameless faceless disposable escorts catch up and mess
things up? (remember how DV lost, his escort panicked and knocked him
out)

He was keeping pace with Luke. He was able to get quite a few shots off and
managed to shoot R2.

For ROTS, Jedis were not protecting Clones, it's the other way around.
There was even a little dialogue over it "they are doing their job"
(i.e. absorb bullets). If Eta-2's were 30% faster or nimbler than
ARC-170's then there's no sense to slow down to match ARC-170's speed
just to sacrifice them needlessly.

Their job was to be a distraction.

>From Ep.4-6, there's clearly that sense, bigger ships are slower and
better armed, smaller ships are faster and nimbler. The on-screen
feel is roughly

A-Wing, TIE-I, TIE/TIE-A, X-Wing, Y-Wing, TIE-B, B-Wing

If you go by size, then Eta-2 (5.5m) should be somewhere on the
light-end near TIE-I and ARC-170 (14.5m) should be on the heavy-end
between Y-Wing and B-Wing. So if there weren't that scene of Eta-2
and ARC-170 flying tight _during_combat_, it would be reasonable to
think ARC-170 is a heavy fighter with more guns and gadgets
(hyperdrive? shield?)

Look overall the scene makes sense. The Jedis need to get on the
command ship (forgot name) and it's senisble to counter Droid swamps
with Clone swamps. But Lucas' particular way to shoot the scene:
making big fighters fly in formation with small fighters (V-Wings
would have been so much better than ARC-170), result in a small
erosion of suspension of disbelieve. I really didn't realize this
until the third time seeing that scene (a few days ago on the
neighbor's big HDTV), but now I realized it was annoying me
subconsciously way back in the theatre.

I can see your point.

OH GIVE ME A BREAK. Someone made a boo boo in the script, correct it
or leave it be, don't dig a pit to hide a pot hole.

That is what George said in the commentary. He cleared it up because people
never got what he was trying to get across. How can you assume what he
meant in the first place?
