Yep, it seems they MUST have a Gundam in nearly every Gundam production.
Basically, Gundam is used as a marketing tool nowadays. It's like
Marketing has ignored the whole point of a Gundam. IIRC, Gundam is a
test bed prototype that is meant to test out advanced technologies as
well as a symbol of the Federation. Am I correct or off base?
While I agree with your idea of a story of pilots that went from
fighters to GM's, I don't think marketing would like it! I say throw 'em
overboard! It's like "No new Gundam per every story, then forget it! &
marketing closes their pocket book, turns & walks away! My other point
should be obvious, Gundam is & always should be, about the mecha. My
ingrained love of robots hooked me & the characters have kept me hooked
They're so obsessed with a Gundam always being the highlight/spotlight
that they neglect the rest of Gundam's extensive history & background.
Fighters is okay & all, but the temptation to do a Top Gun/Transformers
rip off in a Gundam coat could interfere with otherwise good intentions.
I understand that you mean the pilots start in fighters & then transfer
to GM's, but it's a delicate line that must be keep to avoid running
into rip off territory.

time of a Federation unit that started with fighters and survived to
use GMs. What I would love to see even more than that is a story
like some you hear out of the American Civil War where for various
reasons, you have families split down the middle. With one side
fighting for the Federation and the other for the Zeons.
