A slightly 'nicer' way of phrasing it -

Anyone who cared enough to want to break away from the corporate guidelines probably has their own pet project that they'd like to work on instead of trying to 'fix' problems with Gundam.

I don't think it is possible. In my opinion there are really two types of
creators: Visionaries and Yes-Men. The Visionaries usually tend to be so
concerned with their own visions that they wouldn't want to be wasting their
time in another visionary's playground. Yes-Men on the other hand are
content to churn out a serviceable product within their bosses constraints.
I don't think that anyone strong enough to challenge Bandai, and the
marketing team, would want to do a Gundam series out of respect for Tomino
and because they would rather do their own thing.
