Another angle that hasn't come up is the role of a high profile
creator. With Tomino out of the picture, is no one able to take a
stand from the creative end? Is it all driven by accounting and
marketing from here on out?

I think there are quite a few big-shots out there who has enough
weight to counter any marketing machine. But I don't know if anyone
in the current Gundam team who is able and willing to take that
challenge. None of the three remaining big names: Okawara, Yaz and
Katoki, is a viable candidate.

It's certainly interesting that Bandai wants to keep Yaz busy on the
Origin and not exploit his talent or star power on Seed and the "3rd
Fan Base".

I don't think it is possible. In my opinion there are really two types of
creators: Visionaries and Yes-Men. The Visionaries usually tend to be so
concerned with their own visions that they wouldn't want to be wasting their
time in another visionary's playground. Yes-Men on the other hand are
content to churn out a serviceable product within their bosses constraints.
I don't think that anyone strong enough to challenge Bandai, and the
marketing team, would want to do a Gundam series out of respect for Tomino
and because they would rather do their own thing.
