Well, the problem with a lot od SEED designs is that they're, for lack
of a better term, busy. It's the sort of thing Wing or G could get
away with given the premise of each respective series, but that falls
flat in SEED's environment. So, the charge of being superfluous, out
of place, busy, or whatever makes perfect sense there. But the Dogas
and the Kaempfer are the very essence of practicality, and they
embrace that role without (IMO) sacrificing Zeon aesthetics.
I can understand disliking the push toward making MS designs more
"realistic", particularly when it comes to retrocons, but what
confounds me in this case is the fact that Minh is a huge fan of
Katoki (who basically pioneered the movement). Liking Katoki's work
and disliking the Dogas/Kaempfer is just utterly non-sensical to me
(which should not be taken as a criticism; like I said, he's free to
dislike whatever he likes, and he doesn't have to justify his opinions
to me or anyone. They just confound me, is all).
I think you hit the nail on the head with your statement. I do find the
Seed designs very busy, and they do have too many weapons (they're like
Swiss Army Knives in mecha form, for me). I actually find it funny that
they don't make a pit stop every now and then just to refuel (oh wait,
the impulse does that, LOL).
In the case of Okawara art, however, it may be a matter of the fact that
Okawara's style deeply affects people.
I've always told my friends over in mechapinoy that before they yell
"BOO" on any new series with okawara at the mecha helm (the reaction to
the Strike, inititally, was a great example), that they should watch the
mecha in action, and see it in kit form - I believe that while Okawara
has incredible creativity (or at least, he had, in the beginning), he
somehow is able to make anything look clunky and superrobot-ish. This is
also the reason why I find his work in G-Gundam to be perfect - Okawara,
by dint of fate, is the creator of the real-robot style, but in truth,
his heart is in the super-robot world.
