Not always. The Zugock-E, NT-1 and especially the Hygog, for me, kick
the shit out of the original designs, I like them way better as
retrocons. And the Kampfer is my favorite of the "Hey, that thing was
never part of the original canon!" designs. 0083 had some nice Gundams,
too.
