I wasn't there, but Prof. Farber initiated contact with me to express him
some ribbons in time for Singapore. He was clearly interested in expressing
his protest of ICANN's closed board meetings with this symbol.
I sent a second batch to Dan Steinberg, then learned later he wouldn't be
able to go. I prepared a third batch, which went by global express
directly to Diane Cabell in Singapore. It didn't arrive until March 4.
Thus, the ONLY ribbons that made it to Singapore were the 10 that Farber
requested.
My preparation has improved with each batch, and Prof. Farber wrote to me
from Singapore requesting the improved version. He has been consistent in
his call for openness and his support for the Grey Ribbon campaign.
I was more successful in distributing the grey ribbons in Washington, D.C.
this week. I gave them out to lots of folk you would expect to see wearing
them and even to Jeri Clausing, reporter for the New York Times, Philip
Sbarbaro (NSI's counsel) and Karen Rose of NTIA. Grey ribbons were
requested by Ken Fowkler of Canada (on WIPO's panel of experts), Sarah
Deutsch (counsel for Bell-Atlantic) and Don Heath (ISOC Pres and a member
of WIPO's panel of experts). Dan will take his batch to Berlin. I'll make
more for next week's Bay Area meeting with Esther Dyson, even one for the
chair, herself.
The problems with ICANN, of course, exceed the issue of holding open board
meetings, There's a crisis in confidence, authority and trust in the
corporation.
Don Telage (NSI's Sr. VP) once told me that "NSI is the corporation
everyone loves to hate." I think ICANN now has earned that dubious
distinction.
